Derived from seaweed, alginates were known to sailors for a long time for their haemostatic and healing properties. Today, those seaweed based biopolymers are transformed and manufactured under different forms to bring solutions to a variety of therapeutic needs.
Calcium alginate has a double therapeutic action; haemostasis and healing. As soon as it comes into contact with blood, calcium alginate frees its Ca++ ions, thus activating platelet aggregation and reducing coagulation time. Simultaneously, calcium accelerates the healing by stimulating the key cells of the healing process.
